Changing thermal compound on Gigabyte R9 390

My graphics card was overheating, but overall system temperatures are fine. The card obviously needed new thermal compound. On every video walkthrough of this process, you will see that the first step is removing the backplate. But not on the Gigabyte R9 390 GV-R939G1 GAMING-8GD G1.

When you try to remove the backplate, you will find screw mounts like this instead of normal screw holes.

As I found out, you don’t need to remove the backplate with this card! Just remove the three screws on the far side of the card, then remove the 4 GPU heatsink screws, and gently peel the heatsink off of the card. Be careful not to break any of the power cables for the fans, and try not to damage the little glue pads that help the card avoid causing reverberation and noise.

Here’s what the stock thermal paste looked like:

Not the worst I’ve ever seen, but it’s obviously not doing the trick. I wiped it off with rubbing alcohol, put some Arctic Silver 5 in its place, put the card back together, and I’m averaging about 15 degrees cooler than before. Perfect!

  1. Ah so it is just my card that has glue instead of thermal, thanks for the info šŸ™‚ was stuck at removing any screw i can….still like a vacum…..wish me luck

    1. My card is a little louder when under load than it was before. In the end, MSI Afterburner was still necessary, but the thermal compound made a big difference.

  2. Will try afterburner, if i dont break it, it is really stuck. tried saffire oc first, checking in wattman what the accual settings become (monitor part. due to inprogram resets.

  3. Hi and thanks for the article! I’ve also wiped-out the old thermal paste from my R939G1 card and applied MX4, while using a credit card to create a very thin “thermal-film” on chip’s surface. More than that, I got the metallic bracket out and did sort of a DIY to make the card to sit tight into the PCI-X slot and not move. Now the air is thrown away to backside of the case from the 2-units space where it used to be the old bracket, instead to get into computer’s case. Of course, temps are 20C lower when using Furmark.
